I started studying software development because the business side of it interested me, although I didn’t have any previous programming experience. The more I learned the more I realised the endless possibilities, ranging from a small script that perfects tiny details to creating a huge webshop for millions of customers.
The ever-changing technologies and technological advancements are extremely interesting to follow whilst trying to visualise what the future will bring. I watch a lot of tech videos, tutorials and online courses on my free time as well, and get a thrill of doing personal projects when I come up with a good idea.
Where have you earned your spurs?
I did my Bachelor’s Degree in Tampere University of Applied Sciences after which I went to the US to do my Master’s in Information Technology at Rutgers University. My childhood dream was to do a degree in the US, and it proved out to be an amazing experience. I made a bunch of good friends and learned unique matters about the local IT field, the business system, and the American culture. I also spent an exchange year in the UK during my Bachelor’s.
I started my career at a young startup called Haltu as a mobile and web developer, after which I moved over to Accenture and started working in the digital identity field. Before coming to Columbia Road I also worked for Nixu for 1,5 years.
Why Columbia Road?
Columbia Road caught my eye almost immediately after it was established. I followed it on social media and read the CR blog, which breathed a fresh and business savvy vibe. Columbia Road seemed like a cool place to work at, and I had been interested in ecommerce for some time already. A friend from Columbia Road told me good things and got the ball rolling by connecting me with relevant people.
I had heard that Columbia Road is very people-centric and treats its employees well whilst understanding their needs. That resonated well. Columbia Road provides great opportunities to develop technological skills, and the cross-functional teams allow you to also understand other aspects and how it all connects to business. CR has also had a sign on the street in front of the office that says “Looking for devs who are good and nice.” I like to think I’m both :D
Lauri, what will make our clients love Janne?
"Janne is a tradesman who is truly passionate about his work. He is always on the hunt for new technologies and ways of working, which are also enriched by his diverse study background. His people friendly attitude and curiosity towards new things are qualities that make working with Janne a true pleasure," says Lauri Eloranta, Managing Partner at Columbia Road.
What makes your heart beat a little faster?
I enjoy watching online tech courses and tutorials. I’m always up for discovering new technologies and I am excited to learn something novel in each project. We have two dogs and a cat whom I’m fond of and enjoy messing around with. They need several walks every day, so they keep me active. One of my favourite pastime activities is online gaming. Luckily, I have a lot of friends and old colleagues who are playing the same games so it is also a great way to keep in touch and to catch up.
