I have always loved maths and logic – I felt I had a natural tendency for maths, which made it an easy subject for me in school. I used to read a lot of computer and tech related magazines when I was a teenager, but never seriously considered becoming a programmer when first choosing a university to apply to (perhaps due to the not-so-glamorous mental image I had of working in programming).
I completed a master’s degree in Environmental and Energy Technology, but soon after graduating, I ended up working in software development! I did some MOOC programming courses at the University of Helsinki and degree studies in software engineering in Metropolia, whilst working as an application developer trainee on the side.
Where have you earned your spurs?
In my first client project (at IBM) I was given a lot of responsibility right from the beginning, which in hindsight, has resulted in a very steep learning curve. In the project my responsibility areas included creating the frontend part, a multi-page React web application, integrating the application to the client’s application platform, and helping my colleague with creating small Python microservices. In the project I also had a great colleague, who taught me a lot about building high quality software, pushing me to develop as a professional even more. Having the opportunity to utilise the tools I had just learnt on university courses in real projects was a great learning experience.
Why Columbia Road?
I wanted to work in a place where I would get the feeling of belonging to a community, a sense of being one big family – I felt Columbia Road had that quality. Furthermore, I was fascinated by the autonomy all Roadies have, and how the company is led. During my university studies I also completed a long minor in Industrial Engineering and Management, which is why I’m glad that I will get to utilise my business related studies on top of my programming skills at Columbia Road.

What makes your heart beat a little faster?
I lived in Mexico for one year, which taught me to love reggaeton music and Latin cultures! I still love traveling to Latin countries whenever I have the chance. On a more day-to-day basis I enjoy hanging out with my friends and going to Body Combat to battle the C-posture caused by constantly sitting in front of my computer :) In my free time I like to also take online courses to learn new things and to fill-in gaps in my knowledge.
