Hi Heli, how did you get good at what you do?

I honestly got here through pure curiosity, hard work and a bit of a happy accident. My path didn’t start in tech; I was working in a contemporary art gallery when a website renewal project planted a seed of interest in the digital world. It just goes to show that if you're inspired to try something new, you should! I eventually pivoted to study Business IT, where I realised I wasn't a natural-born developer, but in the end I fell head over heels for data and data visualisation. It was the perfect area where I could bridge the gap between creative and technical work while deepening my understanding of the world around me.

I've been incredibly privileged to meet people who trusted me with a big pair of boots to fill early on. Landing in the deep end with major clients forced me to learn fast and think big. I've always been determined to dive into the 'why' behind the work, mastering both technical implementations and analysis to find the best solutions. My background as a producer and 'enabler' has been my secret weapon. It helps me see the big picture and ensure that the tools serve the people who use them.

Why Columbia Road?

Coming from a marketing agency, I was inspired by the broader offering at Columbia Road. The curious person in me instantly spotted an opportunity to learn something new every day. Being surrounded by over 100 experts in different fields is a true privilege; you get to spar and share knowledge, growing together. The digital sphere is so broad that no one can master it all, but when people align to share their expertise, the result is truly greater than the sum of its parts.

I love the way we look at work that others might see as mere technical implementation. Instead, we treat them as complex problems to solve. That approach allows us to take a step back, get some perspective, and figure out the best possible solution. My first months here have already shown me that people honestly care for both their clients and their colleagues. It’s a solid foundation for success and growth: something I personally value a lot.

What makes your heart beat a little faster?

My happy place is our holiday home in the archipelago. Even though I was born and raised in Helsinki, there is a small country girl living in me! Escaping the city bustle to leave everything digital behind (or at least trying to) does wonders. Strolls in the woods, a little wood-chopping, and a proper sauna work miracles. It’s all about the balance. I guess I answered how to make my heart beat a little slower, though.
