Riku_HänninenHi Riku, How did you get good at what you do?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a curiosity about technology, visuality, and a craving to work with my hands, which led me to study graphic and industrial design. After working as a designer for some years, I felt the urge to broaden my skills which is why I decided to do a master’s degree in International Design Business Management (IDBM) in Aalto University. Studying IDBM taught me important lessons in working with ambiguity as well as cross-discipline collaboration – skills that have turned out to be incredibly useful. During my career I’ve learnt mostly through working with, and learning from, my peers.

Where have you earned your spurs?

Working with numerous clients across multiple industries has made me into the designer I am today. I’ve worked in large companies in industries such as travel, fintech, energy and retail. My role in the projects has spanned across high-level service design to the fine art of perfecting the UI. I’ve also had the pleasure of working in several different digital consultancies, so I possess an extensive level of understanding of the consultancy sector as well.

Why Columbia Road?

Initially, what made Columbia Road pop up on my radar, was that the employer branding was done so immaculately. Later on I was attracted by their focus on marketing, growth hacking and digital commerce. I felt like joining Columbia Road would also help me to learn a new angle on design. Also, I loved their playful and modern culture.

The impression I had of Columbia Road really holds true based on my experience after joining the company. The laid-back culture, modern ways of working and the attention to detail in all things really does exist. For me, the most meaningful quality of Columbia Road projects is that, like everything else, design is directly linked with measurable business impact.

Eero, what will make our clients love Riku?

“Alongside Riku’s excellent design skills, he can help customers expertly because of his fantastic communication and engagement ability. Riku has a wealth of experience and can draw on that to provide direction and insight. All of his work has the user at the centre, and he uses this thinking focus to look at the biggest of projects and the smallest of details. Riku always cheers people up around the office and has a big smile on his face," says Eero Martela, General Manager at Columbia Road.

What makes your heart beat a little faster?

My family gives me a positive charge. Other power sources include regular visits to the gym and playing basketball. Also, I seem to wear my designer hat at all times, since I really appreciate a thoughtful service or a good quality product regardless whether it’s digital or not. When a lot of work has been put into something I can not help but appreciate it.
