I have always enjoyed working with computers. When I was 6 years old, I tried to learn my first programming language, Logo. It was quite challenging for me back then – but it left a lasting impact. Ten years later I went to a business school to learn the basics of computer science. Later on I continued to Metropolia to learn more about web, design, and programming. My older brother is also a very talented programmer, and he taught me several things in my early programming years.
I feel comfortable working with aesthetics and visual as well – I started playing around with Photoshop when I was 15, and after getting started with my career, have done some web/digital design projects. Programming is still my main thing. I really enjoy programming problems and finding a solution for them.
Where have you earned your spurs?
I have worked for the past 16 years in web development related projects with various technologies in different sized companies. At the end of my first degree studies in 2005, I got my first clients as a freelancer. In 2007, I got my first web developer job at Really Helsinki, where I learned much more about front-end technologies and back-end development on bigger scale projects.
I have developed a keen eye for details when building front-end, perhaps because of my designer knowledge. I’m also interested in areas such as web application security and pentesting, and got certificates from them.
Why Columbia Road?
I heard from some of my friends that Columbia Road is a very good place to work, and that they have nice projects and a really awesome culture. My friend Teemu Suvinen had also joined Columbia Road a couple of months earlier, and told great things about working there.
I got intrigued by one of Columbia Road’s core values – that the latest technical solution might not always be the best for the client’s needs, even if it might be what the client initially wants. I was keen to see how our projects really impact clients’ businesses. I also wanted to learn how to do growth hacking, and it seemed like Columbia Road would be a great place for that. All Roadies are really talented in what they do, so it’s a great place to learn from others.
Eero, what will make our clients love Timo?
“Timo is an all-round developer. He possesses extensive experience in front-end as well as back-end development, and front-end is where Timo excels especially. Timo is skilled in graphic design, which allows him to be able to make refined tweaks to UI. All-in-all, he’s a veteran when it comes to web development, with rich experience from clients in various industries – and the capability to pick up things really quickly! When working with Timo, you know you’re in good hands”, says Eero Martela, General Manager at Columbia Road.
What makes your heart beat a little faster?
My family: my wife, and 2 daughters (currently 4 and 1 years old). Other than that, I’d say I’m a wannabe DJ, but I haven’t really had too much time to put into my “aspiring DJ career” recently. I also enjoy gaming, but to be honest, haven’t had too much time to put into that either. Nevertheless, when I do have the time, I tend to do some programming also outside of work! I guess it’s a good sign I don’t get bored of programming just because I do it at work?
